Learning More Than the ABCs
Ask any of Mrs. Knight’s Kindergarten friends, and they will tell you that we treat everyone with kindness. Beyond the ABCs, as important as they are, the start of the school year found us practicing how to listen, take turns, and include everyone.
The Power of Classroom Community
One of the things I miss the most about teaching was the classroom community we established. When others were talking, we listened. If someone was lonely, we invited them to play. We quickly learned that we are responsible for our own actions, and that having polite manners makes us feel happy inside.
Luke’s Story: Inclusion in Action
My grandson, Luke, has autism. It was an honor and a privilege to have him in my Kindergarten class. At the start of the school year, Luke kept mostly to himself. It was a big deal if he allowed someone to play near him at recess. One day, as Luke arrived at school, the students spontaneously reached out to greet him. Watching him respond to their simple gesture of love and inclusion was absolutely priceless!
